19.88 SA/D RATIO PUTS WAUQUIEZ 55 ON THE PODIUM OF BLUE WATER CRUISERS
The yachting industry uses a few ratios to facilitate the comparison between sailing boats. Although these ratios are theoretical, they indeed “speak” to discerning sailors when it comes to understanding the difference between a standard boat, and… an outstanding one!
Today we have a look at SA/D ratio: Sail Area over Displacement.
In a nutshell, it’s an indication of the boat’s sail power given its weight.
Have a look at the below formula.

When we started to develop the new Wauquiez 55, what we had in mind was the ultimate blue water cruiser, yet a powerful yacht which would achieve significant daily mileage, sail in (very) light airs, and be on the podium when it comes to top speed.
With her 18.7t light weight displacement, and her 1725sq ft of sail area (main+genoa), the Wauquiez 55 shows an impressive 23.13 SA/D ratio!
Discerning sailors would object that a blue water cruiser should allow for a significant extra load, including all must-have and nice-to-have equipment for long range sailing journeys.
And you know what? They are RIGHT!
With her 23.9t full-load displacement, and the same sail area, she still shows an incredible 19.64 SA/D ratio!
See below grid showing boat categories, and you’ll get an idea of how different the helm sensations can be on such a cruising yacht…

Fair winds,
